Well, that's one main point of session-management. Actually, SM
provides a way to snapshot your session (e.g. when your desktop is
tidy) and go back to that, but gnome-session does not implement that
just now.

Not yet with gnome-session. You could toy with xsm. Or don't use SM at
all (cf. "starting gnome without session-management").
