I think you need a different smbmount, in Debian there's a smbfs for 2.0.x
kernels and a smbfsx package for 2.2.x kernels. Duno about RedHat. Maybe the
only difference is on which it is compiled. Not sure.

with 2.2.x kernels I mount using:
  smbmount-2.1.x //server/share -c 'mount /mountpoint'
