Change this (in .Xclients or .xinitrc):

panel & [or gnome-session &]
exec wmaker

to this:

wmaker &
exec gnome-session

You probably need to run the background-properties, keyboard-properties,
and mouse-properties above the wmaker line, but I can't rememeber the
exact syntax.
