installing and running gnome

Hi folks.  I just finished installing RH5.2 with the new kernel on my
laptop, and I'm interested in getting gnome to run with it.  I downloaded
all the rpm's from the ftp site, installed them (I had to do
a --replacepkgs, because otherwise i kept getting dependency errors.  Maybe
that wasn't such a good idea?).  I've tried running it, but it doesn't seem
to work.  Clearly, I'm not doing something right.  Could someone set me
straight?  Thanks,
