they were accidentally checked in by someone working on the
translations, I would say a mistaken merge. 

make distcheck does not catch these errors.  If you can provide us
with patches that will make distcheck make this work, I will
appreciate it a lot.  I unfortunatelly have an extremely large TODO
list now.
