It really does sound cool, but I would put this info into the About box,
too. Concerning the package problem, I'd have a --with-package-name=...
option for configure, which defaults to "gnome-core 1.0.9 tarball" or
similar. This could be set to "Red Hat gnome-core-1.0.9-3 RPM" or "Debian
gnome-core-1.0.9-2" or whatever else with this switch (and then be shown
in the About box easily and with an extension to the .desktop file format
in the panel too). We needn't determine the package of a program
dynamically, you know.
