About the CD tray being locked when gtcd is open, Linux locks the tray if
any program has the CD drive device open (either as a CD player program
does, or if it is mounted). Currently gtcd holds the CD device open so
that it can send commands and read status from it. This is why you can't
use the eject button while gtcd is open.
I think one of Tim's (the guy who wrote gtcd) plans for the new version of
gtcd was to set it up so it only opened the cd drive device when it
actually wanted to do something. This would fix the problem you seing.
Don't ask when this will be ready though -- that depends on how much time
Tim has (gtcd2 will have a number of other internal changes as well as
this).
If you want to see that behaviour in the current gtcd, patches are
welcome.
James.
