RE: gnome starts up slow - session problems

I've seen this (slow Gnome startup) as well with the latest "official" RPMs
for Red Hat. I finally switched back to xdm from gdm and the problem no
longer happens.

In my case, this always happened only the first time I logged in after
rebooting my computer. After taking minutes for Gnome to start, I couldn't
log off from the menu - the logoff button would do nothing. If I looked in
/var/gdm/:0.log I would see multiple copies of the:

GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 authentication
rejected.

message. If I tried to run "save-session --kill" in a terminal I would get
the same message.

If I then killed the X manager with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, and logged in again,
everything was hunky-dory.

Going back to xdm with "exec gnome-session" as the only line in my .xsession
solved the problem. But darn! I like gdm!
