gdk-message: Got event for unknown window: 0x20000001

I have gnome 1 with redhat 5.2 and enlightenment 0.15.  All files are
there as per the redhat/gnome site.
Most big apps like GMC work fine but whenever I try to run the panel.
gnomelinuxconf, and some others, I get the message: gdk-message: got
event for unknown window: 0x200001 (or whatever number)  this repeats
over and over until I crash or get out of the app.  I have to run
enlightenmnent only, starting with gnome-session is asking for a slow
and painful death. I also get a lot of other similar messages about
CORBA can't do this or that, etc..  I think it's all related.  Please,
ANY ideas would be really appreciated.  is there some environment
variable i  need to set here?    thanks.
