Trying to acquire real-time priority would be a good thing. But making
esd setuid root is not so hot an idea. Note that you can still start
is as root if you trust it. Other sites with stricter policies will
have their users start esd, which in this case will run with normal
priority.

If you're not on hard real-time system (which std Linux is not),
you'll still experience pauses under high load, albeit less frequent.
Additionally, your sound-producer has to be rt-scheduled, too.
