Getting it to work?

GNOMErs:

I just followed all the instructions at www.gnome.org/start to get gnome
running on my RedHat 5.1 installation.  I finished installing all of the
RPMs, but I don't know what to do now.  I feel a little stupid, but would
someone give me a push in the right direction?  I've tried adding the
following commands to the end of my .xinitrc file:

background-properties --init &
keyboard-properties --init &
mouse-properties --init &
panel &
exec fvwm2

but that doesn't do the trick for me.
