Hmm... The recipe I used went something like this:
1) Checkout imlib and gtk+ (themes-2)
2) autogen, make, and install gtk
3) autogen, make, and install imlib
4) autogen, make, and install gtk/themes
5) Fix the Makefile.am in gtk/themes to add -lm to each of the _LD_LIBADDs (or 
   such) -- is this just me?
6) autogen, make, and install gtk/themes again.
7) play
8) Wonder wether gtk_init should parse ~/.gtkrc and ~/.gtkrcprogname, where 
   progname is the part after the last slash in argv[0] -- thoughts?  I'd do
   it myself, but I'm betting there's some issue that I'm missing here.

BTW, why isn't themed the head branch of gtk+?  The bugs ought to get worked out faster that way.
