First, have look into the Debian bug tracking system:
http://www.debian.org/Bugs/

I'm currentry using the latest 'frozen' (slink) packages and it is working
for me, except the GNOME Help Browser.
In the last weeks X was often some kind of broken. I solved it by removing
ALL X related stuff and installing X newly.
GNOME may not work when you use the wrong gtk+ packages.
