Is this not the kind of integration CORBA does with other languages? Sorry
if I am wrong, as I am new to gnome and still trying to compile from the
cvs trees.
If I am correct about this, this could be accomplished with java
extensions to corba on top of JDK.

At the time being, there are two ways to implement true type fonts on top
of an X server. It has only been implemented in the font server. Two font
servers which index truetype fonts are xfstt and xfstf (?). The former
somehow (by something I read on the latter's page) mangles the normal
rules that xfs follows.
Now, the problem is that fonts in the font server are not added to
X's raw font list. Gnome (rather, GTK must support this) needs a few
simple extensions in order to communicate with it (usually on
localhost:2100 I think). This adds another layer of network transparency
in that you may host all of your fonts on one server.
