I get this too, it comes from icewm. I have the 0.9.2 version, and the
docs don't mention anything about this (and I haven't had the time to
dive into the code).
Another thing I noticed with this version of icewm is that I cannot
change focus away from the session manager. I'm not sure how this will
affect gnome, but it certainly affects every other X application.
To be more detailed about it, I can in fact take focus away from xsession
(that neat SM available from ftp.x.org) but it jumps back into focus about
1 second later. As you can imagine, this is quite annoying.
As a guess, these two events are somehow related :)

PS: apologies for trolling the other day. It's sad to think that I had to
resort to that behaviour to get any useful information.
