I think the problem was that the /proc thing wasn't cleanly separated
out: it seemed too central to the idea. The proposal is that new apps
will set the hints themselves, and there would be a new process which
will monitor /proc (or equivalents in other operating systems) and set
hints for old apps.
The displaying program *only* needs to monitor the hints, and so can
be portable; the clients only set hints, so they can be portable. So
we've just got the /proc glue which is non-portable, which only
affects legacy clients.
That seems much more acceptable, as a general solution. Can you see
anything wrong with it?
