Try either of the following:
    1) In addition to `make distclean` make sure you `rm config.cache`
    2) Run `make maintainer-clean` instead of make distclean.
The basic idea is to get rid of the config.cache file.

Although I have both gtk-1.0 and gtk-1.1 installed on my system, I'm pretty
