I don't think anything is stopping you from running a file manager
other than gmc.

My personal goal is to let any Gnome component be replaced.  The plan
for enabling this is to define all inter-component communication via
generic CORBA interfaces.  Then any part which implements the proper
interface can seamlessly replace any other part.

The default will definitely be to run gmc, however.

If your replacement doesn't implement the appropriate CORBA
interfaces, then you'll lose.
