it's not a requirement for any of the apps (except the applets of
course:) ... it's just that you will probably run it to get the
"full gnome experience" ...

msot likely you are running wharf and goodstuff all of the time
anyway ... it's basically gonna be a convinient place to start apps
and put applets on ...

gmc will then also provide desktop icons .. if you don't need it ..
don't run it ...
