more of 'can't find gdk_imlib'

I have the .2 tarballs for Gnome, and get the following at the premature
conclusion of running ./configure in gnome-libs-0.2/

checking for inflate in -lz... yes
checking for jpeg_abort in -ljpeg... yes
checking for png_get_valid in -lpng... no
checking for TIFFClose in -ltiff... yes
checking for DGifOpenFileName in -lgif... no
checking for gdk_imlib_init in -lgdk_imlib... no
configure: error: I could not find gdk_imlib

However, I've just built imlib from the source on labs.redhat.com, and
ldconfig yields, in part, this:

ldconfig: version 1.8.12
/usr/local/lib:
	libImlib.so.1 => libImlib.so.1.6.0
	libgdk_imlib.so.1 => libgdk_imlib.so.1.6.0
	libpng.so.2 => libpng.so.2.1.0
	libz.so.1 => libz.so.1.1.2
	libtest_messages.so.0.1.1 => libtest_messages.so.0.1.1
	libobjectmanager.so.0.1.1 => libobjectmanager.so.0.1.1
	libmnutils.so.0.1.1 => libmnutils.so.0.1.1
	libgtk.so.1 => libgtk.so.1.0.1
	libgdk.so.1 => libgdk.so.1.0.1
	libglib.so.1 => libglib.so.1.0.1

Being *new* at this I assume I've just missed something really obvious.

Thoughts, exhortations, rebukes, etc?
