how about this ... if an app is large and whoever is writing it feels
that's the right way to do it ... maybe it should check on startup if it's
window is larger then the screen .. if it is ... try to start up in 
"smaller" mode ...

maybe just checking the screen dimensions on startup and deciding that
small mode should be used on 800x600 displays ..

I doubt we should limit ourselves to anything smaller ...

(though it would be nice to design apps with GNOME/CE in mind, which I
doubt will have a very large resolution) ... so for example I think
something like a panel would not be usable on GNOME/CE ... I think there
would need to be a very cut down version (just menu and launchers say)
... which would be smaller by default
