I had this problem, and it kept me off of GNOME for a long time. If
bugged Federico and Miguel mercilessly until they figured out I must
have another libgtk.a somewhere. It turns out that I had (way back)
installed GIMP from an RPM, and it had put those libs in /usr/X11R6.
I don't know how to make sure such things will absolutely never
happen.
