For the two people who asked me about this, I'm home now and here's the
error message I get in the xterm when I run gmc:

Loading Theme /usr/local/lib/gtk/themes/engines/libmetal.so
Adding: [(([^0-9]|^[^\.]*)\.([1-9][A-Za-z]*|n)|\.man)$]
Adding: [([^0-9]|^[^\.]*)\.([1-9][a-z]?|n)\.g?[Zz]$]
Adding: [\.cpio\.gz$]
Adding: [tar\.gz$]
Adding: [^RMAIL$]

GLib-CRITICAL **: file ghash.c: line 131 (g_hash_table_lookup):
assertion `hash_table != NULL' failed.

GLib-CRITICAL **: file ghash.c: line 131 (g_hash_table_lookup):
assertion `hash_table != NULL' failed.

** WARNING **: Root window clicks will not work as no GNOME-compliant
window manager could be found!

Icewm has picked up the gnome menus and has a gnome icon for the
associated programs. I don't know if this happened after I rebooted,
but then I was so concerned about gmc I didn't notice this. the
desktop/root window icon is totally unresponsive to the mouse and has to
be killed -9 to get it to go away unless I do run it in a window.

I've upgraded sed to 3.02, umb-scheme to 3.2-7, gettext to 0.10.35
(using the RedHat 5.2 rpm), and checked autoconf, automake, and
autoheader and updated at least one of those. All other changes are per
the 5.1 updates.

And here is the error message for gnomecard:

 [rebecca@ogoense rebecca]$ gnomecard
 Loading Theme /usr/local/lib/gtk/themes/engines/libmetal.so
 Message: [435] returning buffer 0x80abfb8 from recv_reply
 Message: [435] returning buffer 0x80abfb8 from recv_reply
 Message: setting col 0 title to Card Name
 Message: setting col 1 title to Email
 Message: setting col 2 title to Organization
 Message: gnomecard_clear_canvas not implemented
 Message: gnomecard_clear_canvas not implemented
 [rebecca@ogoense rebecca]$

Interestingly enough, I couldn't find a binary for aisleriot in
/usr/local/bin which may explain why the cards flash and go away.

How should I proceed?
