How about filter capabilities (e.g., *.txt)?  Or is it already there
and I've just missed it?  

And that shouldn't be hard - I think even I could do that with my
minimal gtk skills - and yes I'm willing to do it in gtk 1.3, but not
before 5PM today :-).
