remembering of course that the power of text file based configuration is
the amazing flexibility it gives you in editing things.  going from being
able to configure my environment with anything that can edit text files
(stop and think about that for a while) to only being able to edit it
through an annoying database front end should definitely be avoided.  put
the text files in a sane place and make some tools that can edit them if
the current ones aren't pretty enough.
