The Gnome-NL team decided *against* using the ij/ij (U+0133 LATIN SMALL
LIGATURE IJ) ligature for various reasons:
- hard to type
- hard to search/grep for
- it's *ugly* in many fonts because it will need to fallback to another font
- Unicode ligatures are evil (see below for why)
Ligatures are on the typographical/rendering level, not on the syntactic
level, so the rendering engine should take care of it. I do not know about
the features Pango has in this area, nor do I know how widely spread decent
ae/æ and oe/œ glyphs are in fonts, compared to to the ij/ij glyphs.
