After some tests, I found that in the case of the code you mentionned in
your first mail, it works only with the Perl parser:

$ xgettext -k_ -kN_ -L Perl --from-code=UTF-8 -o messages.pot
extension.js

I will update the Wiki page to reflect this possible issue.
