Wow, you're right. I never expected others to ever look at our .po
files! :)

...pointed me to this bug report:

  http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23796

It seems the original singular string was only kept for compatibility
reasons. I'd say it is safe for new/updated translations to use the same
string.
