Indeed. You need to clone the (whole) repository
and you cannot cherry-pick a subdirectory only, as it was possible
with Subversion.
There are a few ways around it, and I expect to see them working soon.
With damned-lies/vertimus, there is working going on to be able to
submit translations
through the web interface.
In addition, with http://github.com/simos/intltool-manage-vcs/ there
is work to automate
the retrieving of repositories and committing changes so that the
translator is focusing on
the actually translation only.
