If I was using xmodmap, and it doesn't work, I'd be interested in the
solution to make it work.  Actually, I'd be satisfied with getting my
settings back, but letting me know that they don't work won't help
much.  Is it at all an option to pop-up a keyboard configuration applet
here?  That would implicitely say "reconfigure your keyboard settings".

That's where I saw the option to swap Caps and Control (the most
common case according to Jody), so that should help in most of the
cases.

I don't think there's such a wording, so I don't think there should
be such message at all.  We can't fix it, so to hell with it.  Or, we
can propose them alternate solution: "here you go, a keyboard capplet
which allows you to get at least something back".

Yes I believe you, but I'm still not convinced this is the best
solution.  Of course, I also believe Jody and you have spent more time
than me on this, so I will argue no more.  I brought my opinion up,
it's up to you to see what to do with it :)
