If you have the possibility to somehow make a potfile out of these
desktop files, please do. There are many important advantages of this,
most importantly that translators will see and be able to update their
translations when things have changed, and that all translators don't
need to edit translations in the same file, with the possible danger of
possibly breaking each other's translations (history shows that this
would always happen, sooner or later, with raw desktop files).
