Yes it was both optional and an applet. The applet has a handle which is
actually a label containing the name of the foccused application. With
the handle you could drag the applet to the desired position. To enable
this for gnome applications, I put a option in the control center. The
problems were related to very X specific things which I don't know
enough about X to solve. Specifically for the menu to apear it took a
couple of focus events, there were some other quirks with embeding which
I don't remember.

I'm not sure if it still works though. Somewhere along the line the
Bonobo plug/socket changed which effectively broke the patch. I wasn't
keeping track of exactly what Bonobo version I was using when it did
work (I just used what was on my system). Maybe it works now, I'm not
sure.
