why I don't use gnome...

Minor:

1) Want it to be more mac like:
   - menus on top. Mark apparently has solved this, but the solution is
pushed until 2.0, which is a year away?
   - a better app lister (macintosh is better then windows in this
regard, but we have multiple desktops, so design work is needed)

The biggy:

2) I cannot _not_ have the desktop managed by gnome. This is bizarre, I
can start up panel separetely, but I cannot start gnome-sesion without
have a root app running. I don't like having icon's on my desktop, I
don't like having the mouse doing anything when I click off of any
windows. It's my space to not worry that I might click on something by
accident. It's windows 3.1 and unix history. I'm very used to this, as
I'm sure many others are and think that the root app thingy is a horrible
application besides ("regenerate desktop icons?"). I think it's most
useful application is to drag stuff there, but it's normally obscured
anyway (I don't live in my file manager).

Please tell me how to shut this off, or tell me if there is a GNOME reason
why it needs to be there...

Thanks,

kenneth
