What about an entry in the task list with the name
of the app and a progressbar under the text. Ie transparent
text on top of the progressbar.

The entry in the task list could be started by external
means, not the application itself. A number of states could
then be collected from the kernel and the server to show
some progress. That is load progress, process state, window
manager responses, etc. All programs goes through the same
cycle and it should be easy to map this into some visual
progress.
