Ok, another note:
The background changer is part of gnome-control-center.
Gnome control center requires that gdm is installed for the User
-account panel.
I wants this schema in particular /usr/share/glib
-2.0/schemas/org.gnome.login-screen.gschema.xml
So I still need gdm/gnome-shell installed.
That schema is used only for "enable-fingerprint-authentication"
setting. I could write patch to check if that schema exists, but main
question is if they are going to accept it.
But is this real problem? Does installed gdm cause any problems?

No, gdm installed doesn't cause any problems. It's only "problematic"
if it is running since it spawns a separate gnome-shell instance for
the greeter session which can leak ~200MB ram per day.
That's why I asked what display manager you used earlier.
