The biggest problem is that multimedia keys are not working (the
functionality got moved to gnome-shell), so it's impossible to i.e.
switch keyboard layouts.

How they did it? Can you give links to commit / commits?

If they moved it to gnome-shell than we could add it in gnome-panel.
