What you're seeing is just how Yelp formats regular table
headings. That is, there's no real spanning. Yelp just
doesn't draw column dividers in table headers.

1. Put the first <tr> in a <thead>.
2. Put the rest of the <tr>s in a <tbody>.
3. Remind me to implement some nice formatting on <thead>.

I had tried using <thead> and <tbody> as you indicated, and just didn't see anything special come of it when I re-rendered the page in yelp.  I'll put the <thead> and <tbody> elements back in.  It's nice to know that it is just a yelp/xslt formatting issue.
