Hi.  I have the same problem with the gnome-speech DECtalk driver.  I
use alsa and have emacspeak using the software DECtalk with no problems.
I think the problem is in the gnome-speech driver.  I noticed yesterday
(05/19) that my gnopernicus from CVS now works with festival.  I use the
Debian package for festival instead of compiling from source.  My setup
wasn't talking very well with festival until yesterday's gnopernicus
update.

If you haven't done so lately, you might want to update your
gnopernicus.
