How are glom applications distributed?

Another fundamental question from a glom newbe:

How are glom applications distributed?

Are they contained in the glom operator document file, 
or is this merely an access pointer to the database where then the web-application is stored?

The latter would of course be preferred from an application distribution and update perspective.
