(1) choose pencil tool
(2) click the first point
(3) shift-click to draw a stright line to the previous point.

If this doesn't work, please give us a lot more detail - does the
beginning click make a mark? Press d to reset the colours to default.
Use select->none in case you're drawing outside a selection.
