[Gimp-user] Some directories are not visible (nor acccessible)

Hi,
Having used GIMP for years and never seen anything like this. Maybe not a GIMP
problem but not seeing it with any other program.

Problem: When using File  -> Open, the "Open Image" window pops up but some of
the directories on my computer are not visible and I can't find a way to
navigate to those directories. If I tried right-click on files in one of those
directories (with any other programs or file managers) and select "Edit with GNU
Image Manipulation Program", I got "Opening 'FILEXX' failed: Could not open
'FILEXX' for reading: No such file or directory" Error Box.

If I copied the file to any other directories (that are visible in GIMP), it
opens fine.

Like I said, never had this problem before and not seeing this problem with
other program.
OS: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS,
GIMP 2.8.22
