There is another possibility too which is to use the "LyX" after converting 
under png or jpg, being noted that the jpg gives a lighter result in term of 
document weight. LyX is not so easy to masterized but far more easy in 
handling the picture parameters.

1. Image->Flatten Image

2. Export PDF

Agreed that Inkscape is the better choice for this type of layout.
