Re: [Gimp-user] gimp-user-list Digest, Vol 14, Issue 45

Thank you for all your replies. I'll try combining different software to reach the scope. Editing in Gimp, vector on inkscape, pubblications and text on scribus. I'll also take a look at Draw.

Ok I just got this computer with windows 8!
I've downloaded GIMP 3 times (2 different sources) and each time I click open
(there is no run option) my mouse turns into the little loading symbol and then
nothing happens. It shows up in task manager as running, but nothing comes up at
all. Even when I end task and try to delete the file it doesn't work.
Help I really need to use GIMP :(

I have took a look at the photoshop blend modes and there are a "color
burn" and a "linear burn" blend mode. I'm not sure if one of these are
equivalent.

The "grain-extract" and the "grain-merge" doesn't seem to have any
equivalent in photoshop.

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/photoshop/cs/using/WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-77eba.html#WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-77e9a

If one of the burn blend modes is equivalent to the one in gimp it
should be easy to add support in the psd-export plugin.
The grain-extract and grain-merge would require more work i guess..

I just tried it on Windows 8 and it works very fine for me. When you're
launching it for the first time it takes pretty long to start up. Did you just
give it some time before killing the task? Try to delete the user folder
".gimp-2.8" of GIMP (found in c:\Users\<yourusername>\.gimp-2.8 and launch it
again.

Hello, I create adverts with Gimp for my magazine www.sardegnaannunci.com .
A feature that I need would be to create border around text.
I reach this target with multiple shade effects or selecing the text using
selection by color, then selection->border and the filling it with color on
a second level under the text (if I do this in the same level I loose
antialias on the text). The problem is that when I want to change the text
I have to delete the levels for this, edit the text and then create the
effect again. Isn't possible to add a feature or a plugin with wich I can
edit the text and the effect together? Or better, a real editor with border
an shadow effects?
Like the one there's on Libre Office.

It's in the plans, but don't expect it any time soon.

In the mean time I suggest you try Inkscape or Scribus and play with
stroke color and width.

It might be better to do this by selecting the text layer and then in
the layers dialog, Alpha to selection

You might be better off duplicating the text layer (maybe several
times) and adjusting the text to a selection of sizes for each layer.
Switch the visibility of the layers on and off as you try things out.

Better method for a very clean result: create a "Path" for the text
(right click on text layer, + "Text to path"), then "Edit/Stroke path"
with a sufficiently wide line.

Not right now, but there is an underlying structure change in Gimp that
will make this built-in in the future (it's easy to do in LO because the
set of possible transforms is limited).
