They often do, especially with lower-end or older cameras.

They may look even better if you click the auto button in levels" then
do "edit as curves" and move th curves back slightly, as levels/auto
clips the highlights and shadows very slightly.

Now, I have a batch of about 80+ scans of old family photos that I would
like to apply this process to en mass.

there's a gimp batch processor in the gimp registry on gimp.org.

You could also try imagemagick, or (at least on Linux) maybe darktable
can do it, if it's packaged for your distribution.
