Ah! Silly me. I put the wrong alias in my .bashrc! I wanted to do
"alias make="make -j1"", but used "alias gcc="gcc -j1"".
(this computer only has two CPUs)

Now it builds.
Now, I am facing another issue: there is no "display" operation.
