Interesting... So basically, until Ubuntu upgrades to gnome3 / gedit3, this plugin isn't going to work?

The one you downloaded, yes. You have to use an older version of your plugin, or to do the upgrade.
On Ubuntu 11.10, there will be Gedit 3, it's just two months to wait.

Have you tried the old trailsave plugin that is compatible with Gedit 2 ?  http://users.tkk.fi/~otsaloma/gedit/
