Jesse and Guy,
thank you for your valuable help.

The 'current' search hit is in fact simply a selection. So, to change
that color, you can add a style for 'selection' (see the cobalt
theme for an example). This however will then of course also mean
that when you select any other text it will be bright yellow, which
is ok if you like that kind of thing :)
I precisely don't want ANY selection to be bright yellow, but just the current (and thus selected) search hit. (Modifying the appearance of non-current search matches is no problem using <style name="search-match" background="#DFDFDF"/>, e.g.)
If I understand right there is no named style in gedit that would refer to the currently selected search hit as opposed to the selection in general.
But there IS a difference in presentation: With the Classic theme, a selection generally shows in a background color which is a kind of bright orange (the color of a selection in any window having the focus, in Ubuntu 8.04 with default theme). While the search is active, gedit's main window does not have the focus, so the selection has a gray background color (#DCD4CC) instead.
So to change the background color of the current search hit, I obviously need to change the color of the selection in a *window without focus*.
How to do this?
Yves
