If the current line is a command to a shell one probably wants to use it over and over. Replacing it could be a disaster.
Selection as input does what you want but I often have to make my tool rewrite it because I may want to do that over too.
What's really needed is a procedure that would allow some commands to gedit from the external tools like a callback or two to change the operation depending on just what text was in the selection or the line.
