FWIW, i find that Droid Sans Mono works well as an alternative coding font.

I had a look at Droid Sans, and I thought it looked promising at first, but it doesn't differentiate O and 0 that well, and it still has the bold problem. I also think that Inconsolata looks better proportioned, but I suspect that is personal preference/"what I am used to" sneaking in.
