Peter,
I don't know of any way of adjusting font spacing to take into account
the extra width of bolded characters, but I have a suggestion about
turning bold off. My personal preference is against bold characters so
I have adjusted my preferred theme. The colour schemes available in
gedit are actually gtksourceview themes, so you need to edit your
preferred theme, which is simply a text file. In the file you'll find
mention of the word "bold", which you need to delete. If gedit was
running while you were editing the theme, restart gedit and your
preferred theme should now appear without bold characters.
If you get really desperate, you could try switching to another font,
although you've probably found Inconsolata after a world-wide font
search.
